HISTORY OF POST 29 IUNVA – CARLOW

2005 – 2009

 

27^th May 2005

 

Post 29 Irish United Nations veterans Association was formed at a meeting in Eire Óg GAA Clubhouse O’Brien Road Carlow on the 27^th May 2005 after a meeting chaired and carried out by members of the National Executive of IUNVA,  namely, Liam Murphy, William Leahy, Michael (Mick) Butler, Eddie Robinson and William Gilbert.  At this meeting Post 29 IUNVA, Carlow, was established and committee posts were filled by the following people;

 

Chairman                  Hugh (Hughie) Kelly

Secretary                  Paul (Wally) Commerford

Treasurer                Joe Dalton

 

HQ Post 29

 

Mr Hugh Kelly was successful in obtaining permission from the management of Eire Óg GAA Clubhouse for Post 29 to hold their monthly meetings. This is the case to the present day.

 

First Meeting of Post 29

 

The first meeting after establishment of Post 29 was held on the 10^th June 2005 at Eire Óg at 2030 hrs. This meeting was attended by,

Hugh Kelly, Paul Commerford, Larry Ellard, John McNally, Joe Curran, John O’Sullivan, Dan O’Sullivan, Noel Dwyer, Murt O’Leary.

At this meeting it was agreed that the Chairman Mr Hugh Kelly would also carry out the duties of Post 29 P.R.O. This meeting also established that all further meetings of Post 29 would occur on the first Wednesday of every month.

 

Chairman’s Chain of Office

 

On the 5^th October 2005 a  Chain Of Office was donated to the post by the family of Hugh Kelly and was presented by Liam Murphy to the Chairman of Post 29 Mr Hugh Kelly at the Post’s first Christmas Function.

 

First Annual Mass

 

On Sunday 5^th March 2006 The Post celebrated its first annual mass and the Post flag Flags were blessed by Fr Tom little at a ceremony held at The Church of The Holy Family, Askea, O’Brien Rd, and Carlow

 

United Nations Memorial

 

At the monthly on Wednesday, 2^nd December 2006 it was proposed that Post 29 should erect a United Nations Memorial / Monument in the grounds of the Church Of The Holy Family at Askea, Carlow on a small plot of land donated by Fr Tom Little and the local parish members.

 United Nations Memorial Committee

 

On the 1^st March 2007 Post 29 established a memorial fundraising committee, John Kelly (Secretary) Hugh Kelly (Treasurer) and Liam O’Rourke (Committee Member) to start work on the raising of funds to erect the UN Memorial.

 

Between 2^nd December and  the 9^th September 2007 after much hard work by all members of Post 29, local contributors, the people of Carlow, and a  grant from IUNVA HQ enough money was raised for the UN Memorial.

 

Unveiling Of United Nations Memorial

 

On Sunday 9^th September 2007 the UN Memorial was unveiled at a ceremony held at the Church of the Holy Family, Askea, Carlow, by Liam Murphy (RIP) Vice President of IUNVA This ceremony was a huge success for Post 29 and was attended by families of deceased members of the Defence Forces / Garda Siochana and local councillors and the Killeshen Pipe Band.
